An elegant hotel, built in 1932, the building underwent an extensive £10m refurbishment and relaunched in 2015 as an attractive 138-bedroomed four-star hotel, spa and events centre. Situated in the heart of Buckinghamshire the hotel enjoys a rural location set at the base of the Chilterns Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty although is only 17mins from the centre of London.
Marketed as providing an ideal weekend retreat for city dwellers seeking an escape or business trip base, One Environments were given the opportunity to prepare the landscape design for the setting to this elegant hotel. The design needed to respond to the simple, white facade which reflects colonial style architecture, whilst relating to the contemporary internal finishes. Our response was a high quality contemporary layout with luxury touches.
We created a stunning entrance approach centred around a large terraced water feature comprising a reflective pool which cascades beneath the hotel’s name in large 3D lettering, into a lower pool. A planting group appears to float above the upper pool creating a green oasis of beautiful textures and forms reflected in the surrounding still pool. The water feature is set within the existing mature landscape and creates a sense of arrival and grander – especially for those arriving in the adjacent drop off. A separate route leads to the car parks.
Our involvement in the design of the entrance approach led to our scope being extended to include the design of an outdoor dinning terrace to the refurbished restaurant and the inclusion of courtyard gardens.
One Landscapes, working alongside the main contractor, BF Darlo Ltd, were responsible for installing the softworks including palms, grasses and perennials.
