Mike, whilst Director of E2 Landscape Architecture, was invited by Home Group to develop proposals for environmental improvements to a housing scheme in Gateshead. Key to the success of the project was the collaborative nature of the process throughout. Mike worked closely with the local residents association to develop proposals for the external space to the three-storey block of flats that were truly sustainable.

Together the team created private and semi private spaces. Private gardens to ground floor flats were defined with bespoke railings. The semi private areas are defined into three zones- an active zone with football goals and basket ball nets, a practical zone with clothes drying facilities and an informal recreation zone with lawns and circular paths. Boundaries and walkways are clearly defined with bespoke railings and decorative gabion baskets create accessible routes for all. Local children made a colourful contribution by painting murals onto canvas to decorate blank walls within the gardens.
