landscape proposals
Part of an international competition to propose a new vision for an emerging world class skyscraper development in Kuala Lumpur’s Istana Negara district. Located next to the famous Merdeka Stadium, a major new park was proposed.
James, as a key member of the ICN team developed a vision for a national plaza to celebrate the nations past, provide a venue for events, exhibitions and concerts as well as every day activities – meeting, relaxing and gathering. The KL 100 tower will soar above the Merdeka Stadium. Connecting these symbols of City and National Identity the Plaza Nasional will become a ceremonial court, city plaza, park and public garden where people will walk, meet, relax and gather.
A grand canopy stretches the entire half kilometre site length, the thirteen strands of the structure represent the united states of the nation. The Plaza is paved with abstract patterns in stone, interpreting motifs and geometry used in traditional arts and architecture including the thirteen stars, deconstructed reflecting state unity and tradition in harmony with contemporary modernity. Lozenge shaped planters and lawns reflect traditional basket weave. The canopy provides shade and shelter whilst the pools of water connected by rills provide a cooling affect.
