ONE’s work across the CIS Building, Eldon Quad, East Campus and Northumberland Road reflects a long-term relationship rather than a single intervention. The opportunity was to help the campus evolve coherently over time, improving legibility, public realm quality and ecological value across projects delivered in different phases.
Each intervention began with observation of how the campus already worked: where students paused, where routes converged and where servicing interrupted pedestrian flow. Rather than imposing one formal gesture, ONE developed a consistent material and planting language that could be adapted to different locations. Tree planting and surface treatments establish continuity, while biodiversity is improved incrementally. Drainage and servicing are considered as part of the wider campus system rather than isolated project constraints.
Campus frameworks need enough consistency to create identity and enough flexibility to absorb change. A strong landscape language can build value gradually, allowing individual capital projects to contribute to a wider estate strategy rather than becoming disconnected episodes.
Outcome
Across successive projects, the campus has become more coherent and legible. Landscape improvements have strengthened connections between buildings and increased environmental quality while allowing the estate to continue adapting over time.
