The planning challenge

Repowering an established wind-energy site at Rogershill Farm offered the opportunity to substantially increase renewable generation while reusing existing infrastructure.

The proposal would replace a 500kW turbine, approximately 59m to blade tip, with a 2MW turbine reaching 125m. Our task was to assess how this increase in scale would affect the surrounding Dorset landscape, including views from the nearby Dorset National Landscape.

Building the evidence

Appointed by DistGen, ONE prepared the Landscape and Visual Impact Appraisal to support the planning application. We combined landscape-character and policy review with field survey, visibility mapping and assessment of representative viewpoints.

The existing turbine formed an important part of the baseline. We assessed the additional effects of the replacement turbine’s greater height and rotor diameter, considering views from settlements, elevated landscapes and recreational routes.

Zone of Theoretical Visibility mapping helped identify potential views of the turbine and guide fieldwork. Actual visibility was assessed on site, taking account of vegetation and other screening.

Understanding the effects

The assessment identified where the replacement turbine’s effects would be most apparent, and where distance, landform and vegetation would limit visibility.

This evidence informed refinement of the turbine position and provided a clear basis for considering the landscape and visual effects alongside the project’s renewable-energy benefits.

Supporting the planning decision

The appraisal provided a clear evidence base for the planning application. Estimated annual generation would increase from approximately 800MWh to 6,000MWh—enough to supply around 1,300 homes.

Planning permission for the repowering scheme was secured in April 2026.
