The planning challenge
The proposed battery energy storage facility at Smeaton Shaw would introduce new infrastructure into an agricultural landscape east of Dalkeith.
The approximately 7.86-hectare site lies close to Smeaton substation and existing power infrastructure, but also near homes and recreational routes. Our task was to assess the landscape and visual effects and help integrate the proposal into its setting of fields, hedgerows and woodland.
Understanding the landscape
ONE prepared the Landscape and Visual Impact Appraisal, supported by fieldwork, landscape-character assessment and visual evidence.
The study focused on a 2km area, where topography and vegetation meant effects were concentrated relatively close to the site. We examined views from nearby properties and recreational routes, considering how the proposed facility would be experienced within the existing landscape.
Testing the views
Specialist visualisations, coordinated with PB Imagery, helped communicate the proposal and its landscape mitigation through the planning process.
These supported consideration of how the facility would appear in its surroundings and how landform and planting could reduce its visual exposure.

Integrating the proposal
Landscape mitigation was developed alongside the engineering layout. Perimeter bunding, native scrub and species-rich grassland were proposed to soften views of the facility and strengthen habitat connections.
Planting responded to existing woodland, hedgerows and field boundaries, helping connect the new infrastructure to the character of its setting.
Planning outcome
The project secured planning permission. The appraisal, coordinated visualisations and landscape proposals provided evidence to support consideration of the battery storage facility within its rural setting.
