Jesmond Assembly sits within a conservation area, where the residential landscape needed to respond sensitively to scale, material character and outlook while creating useful shared and private external spaces for residents.
Completed landscape
ONE developed an elevated podium garden around the structural realities of the building and the rhythms of residential life. Planting is used to define private and shared zones without relying on heavy visual boundaries.
Residential landscapes are part of everyday life, not just a view from the building. On constrained podium sites, subtle distinctions between private, shared and communal space can create independence and neighbourliness without over-designing the environment. Planting, structure and maintenance need to be conceived as one system.

Species were selected for seasonal interest and resilience, while irrigation and drainage were integrated discreetly within the podium construction. The overall composition balances enclosure, outlook and ease of movement.

Outcome
The garden creates a calm and durable setting that supports both privacy and community. Its measured planting and spatial structure allow the landscape to change through the seasons while remaining practical to manage over the long term.
