landscape proposals

Menai Science Parc on Anglesey is a centre of excellence for scientific and innovative industries – the first development of its kind in North Wales. A subsidiary of Bangor University, M-SParc had a vision to create a sustainable, distinctive and dynamic landscape that ‘ignites ambition’ and generates a feeling of energy as soon as you set foot in the park. The site’s green infrastructure assets integrate water-sensitive urban design and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), as well as promoting active and electric travel, and a fully accessibility site.

Digital Construction Award – Constructing Excellence Wales Awards 2018

Project of the Year (Buildings) – Constructing Excellence Wales Awards 2018

Taking inspiration from distant views of the Snowdonia mountain range, ONE Environments worked with FaulknerBrowns to captured this feeling of energy using a continuous flowing Corian® “ribbon” that wraps seamlessly around and through the building and extends out into the landscape. Inside the building the ribbon forms floor, wall and roof surfaces, then flows out into the landscape to form dynamic, overlapping 3-dimensional paths and seating; creating journeys through the site and a series of destinations arranged to encourage interaction amongst tenants within nature.

M-SParc and the main shareholder and operator Bangor University, acknowledged at the start of the design process that the project should provide an opportunity to widen their knowledge of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to improved whole lifecycle costing.

The £20m first phase, opened in March 2018 and was awarded Welsh Construction Project of the Year 2018. This was one of two awards won at the 2018 Construction Excellence Wales awards, the other clearly recognising the scheme’s digital design innovations and the pioneering and collaborative use of digital tools throughout the planning and construction process.

Using BIM technologies and placing collaboration at the heart of the project provided huge benefits for our client, for instance, improved information management, enhanced collaboration within the project team, and consistency of design information resulting in better informed choices throughout the work stages.
