M-SParc, a subsidiary of Bangor University, has developed the first Science Park in North Wales – Menai Science Park on Anglesey.  Their aim is that it will become a centre of excellence for science based and innovative industries, nurturing new organisations and supporting their growth and development.

The £20m first phase, also named M-Sparc, opened in March 2018 and was awarded Welsh Construction Project of the Year 2018. This was one of two awards won at the 2018 Construction Excellence Wales awards. M-Sparc forms the central hub and a catalyst to attract the highest calibre of businesses and academics promoting economic growth, innovations and entrepreneurship. The 5,000m² building features an Open Innovation Space offering conferencing, co-working and hospitality (both for businesses and the wider community) plus incubator and grow-on office space, laboratories, clean workshops and admin facilities.

Key landscape design objectives have been to create a sustainable, eye catching and distinctive landscape that encourages a dynamic and exciting atmosphere among occupants and one that ‘ignites ambition’.

The structure is characterised by a continuous flowing Corian® ribbon that forms floor, wall and roof surfaces, wrapping around the space within while also connecting the building to the exterior landscape. The landscape strategy has been designed to maximise views toward Snowdonia and continue the concept of ribbonsthat wrap seamlessly around and through the building and extend out into the site, unifying and tying together the various strands of circulation.  In the landscape, these overlapping 3-dimensional ribbons create journeys through the site and a series of destinations arranged to encourage interaction with other tenants.
